FAQs

An annual expert inspection by a SEMA Approved Racking Inspector (SARI) is a formal independant assessment of your storage systems. It is designed to ensure structural integrity, verify compliance with UK Health and Safety laws, and identify any damaged components that could compromise workplace safety

Under the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) and PUWER regulations, pallet racking is classified as work equipment that must be regularly inspected by a "technically competent person". While your staff should conduct routine visual checks weekly, the HSE and the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) strongly recommend an expert SARI inspection at least once every 12 months

Failing to have regular inspections can lead to safety hazards, increased risk of accidents, potential legal liabilities, and may void insurance coverage.

The SARI will walk your warehouse floor and thoroughly assess your racking from ground level. Their evaluation covers:
    • Damage Identification: Checking for dents, twists, corrosion, or misalignment in uprights, bracing, and beams
    • Correct Installation: Ensuring the racking is installed in line with SEMA code & Manufacturers requirements and is fit for purpose
    • Load Notices: Verifying that your Safe Working Load (SWL) notices are clearly displayed and accurately match the racking configuration.
    • General Safety: Assessing floor conditions, pallet quality, beam deflection, and forklift truck operations

Yes, it is crucial to inspect older racking systems to identify any safety concerns or necessary maintenance, regardless of their age.

To prepare for an inspection, ensure that all racking systems are accessible, remove any obstructions around them, and provide any past inspection reports.
